Setting

Dropping your characters into an interesting setting can make the scene more memorable. But, it is important to remember to not be too extreme in this matter as it would be too intense to have every single conversation take place in a dramatic back drop.

The reader is more likely to remember events if they can picture them in the place that they are taking place. For example a conversation in the searing heat of a sauna is more likely to stick that the same conversation taking place on the telephone or generic office block.

A good number of writers also fail to remember that there are more senses than simply sight. When bringing the reader into your setting, try to focus on these to fully animate the scene. Frequently ask yourself if you can describe a setting by replacing one of the other senses for sight. For example we can smell the hotdogs cooking, instead of seeing them being cooked. We can hear the mice scurrying in the cellar instead of seeing them run by our feet.
